Eleanor Bryan was also known as Ellender Bryan. She was born say 1720 at Marlborough (?), Chester County, PA; She signed as witness to a wedding in 1730, but her parents weren't married until 1719, so she may have been their first born, certainly their first born daughter. She married William Linvill, son of John Linvill and second wife of John unknown, possibly on on 3 May 1736 at MD/VA Frontier, Opequon, VA; Eleanor attended the wedding of Thomas Mills and Elizabeth Harrod at Josiah Ballingers in Monocacy in the early 18 June 1730 [Frederick County, MD], location of a small community of Quakers near today's Buckeystown, MN with her parents Morgan and Martha Bryan, so she clearly married after that. The Bryan family was firmly settled in Maryland by 1730, although they maintained connections backs in PA.
William's brother, John, likely married on this date based on the marriage records of Rev. Stover who married "two English couples" on this date in Opequon, where the parents of one of each of the couples were prominent. Is it possible this is the marriage for both William and Eleanor as well as his brother John and wife Anna Christina? As of circa 1738,her married name was Ellender Linvill. Eleanor Bryan appears on the 1778 tax list for Rowan County, NC. She appears on the 1778 tax list for Rowan County, NC, This is the first year she appears on the tax lists, though she must have had land before this. Husband, William Linville had extensive land holdings, some of which were not sold before he died. With no probate accounting following his death, there is important information missing. She died after 25 July 1794 at Madison County, KY; In the Morgan Linville papers at the University of Kentucky at Louisville, there is a slip of paper with both "Elinor" and son Morgan paying their taxed on 25 July 1794. A year later, the tax receipt only had Morgan for 1795.

David Linville was born before 1734likely at Liinville Creek, Orange County VA where his father and family had settled by 1735. The date of birth is calculated both from his appearance with brother Thomas, Jr. and their father Thomas Sr. on a 1750 tax record in [Dan River District-filed in Granville County] and from David's role as a chain carrier on his father Thomas's 1754 survey in North Carolina. Both required men to be at least 16. In addition, David certainly would have been at least 21 when petitioning for his own and his father's land in 1762. David first appears on the 1750 Tax List for Dan River with his older brother Thomas and their father, Thomas Sr. Between the 1750 tax list and David's grant application in 1762, there are only two records for him. He witnessed the land of Thomas Linvill on 7 March 1754 at Rowan (now) Surry County, NC; Thomas also had 500 acres surveyed fon Mayo Road south side of Fishers or Piney Mountain - both sons David Linvill and William Linvill were chain carriers 7 Mar 1754. No deed for these 500 acres of the land appear in Rowan County deeds. Nor does it seem the grant was actually taken up. If they were in the Orange County land records they may have been bured as part o Cornwallis's march through the area in 1778. Between 1754-9 David is quite probably one of the "Linville brothers," along with younger brother William, mentioned on a Franklin County NC historical map before 1760 as living along Linville Creek and Linville Mountain (now spelled Lynville) in what is now northern Franklin County, VA. [See the narrative for brother William for complete discussion of this likelihood.] David Linville appears again on the 1759 tax list with his father Thomas Sr. and brother Thomas Jr for Rowan County, NC, but without younger brothers William, Richard, Aaron, and Moses. William was likely no longer living and the other boys not old enough yet to be taxed. David himself first entered a request for a warrant for 700 acres on Belews Creek that included T"homas Linville's improvement," adjoining the Moravian claim 27 Feb 1762. It seems likely that since his father's part of the land wasn't actually "vacant," that the grant David finally got on 27 Aug 1762 was just for the actually vacant 306 acres adjacent to his father's and brother Thomas's land. As with other land of the Thomas Linvill family, no deeds were actually recorded although the warrant indicates a deed was definitely given "2 copies Deed #111." That deed may have been recorded in the lost Orange County deeds. David's Granville Grant for 306 acres on Belews Creek appears to have extended the Linvill family enclave beyond the 400 acres already acquired by his brother Thomas, Jr. and father Thomas, Sr. He was asked in court on 14 July 1767 to be part of a road crew with brother Thomas and others to lay out a road from Cape Fare road near New Garden Meeting House [Guilford County NC] to David Dillion's mill. The road would join Town Fork Road near David Linville's. At the same time, other men were appointed to straighten the road from David Linville's to the Old Moravian on the Town Fork road with Abraham Vanderpool as overseer of that road. at Rowan County. On 13 Oct 1767 David Linville's place was mentioned again in reference to the Cape Fare to David Dillion road. He was a witness On 15 Oct 1767, Thomas Lingwell (sic) and David Lingwell (sic) were included on a road jury to lay out a road from Belews Creek settlement to Salem through the most convenient place to Cornelius Cook's on Dan River Road. The road had been ordered after a petition from the residents of Belews Creek. with Thomas Linvill on 15 October 1767 at Belews Creek, Rowan County, NC. David appeared in court in the following year on 15 Jan 1768 in the Rowan County Pleas and Quarter Sessions when records indicate that Thomas Linvill was an overseer for the road that was already laid out from David Linvilles to the river with the "hands living in Blews (sic) Creek settlement." On 19 Apr 1768, Thomas, David, and Richard Linville were all ordered to appear to qualify to lay out the road from Cape Fear near New Garden Meeting House to David Dillon's Mill to Town Fork near David Linville's. David Linville replaced Abraham Vanderpool as the constable for Belews Creek for 1769. David's location on the road to Dillions Mill continues to be referenced in numerous court records between 10 May 1769 and 9 Aug 1769. Abraham Vanderpool apparently resumed the constable duties for Belews Creek from David as he handed in the 1769 annual tax for that Sept. It seems that this is one of the few fragments of Rowan County tax lists in the 1760s that has survived. in August 1769 at Rowan County, NC. David Linville married Mary Worley (possibly) before 1774 at Surry County, NC; David clearly was married by 1774 as a wife Mary appears on two deeds that year dividing his Belews Creek 306 acres into two portions - one each sold to his brother Richard Linville and neighbor Barnabas Fare. If she was the only wife Mary (his widow Mary is clearly in the 1790 Stockes Co NC census), she was not mentioned by name in his 1787 will. Because Mary (Worley?) Linville second married Carter Barnett about 1799, a Revolutionary Was pensioner, there are records for her and her children by Barnett. However, those records invariably have her as born between 1761-1763 or later. But if David had only one wife, Mary, then she must have been a bit older to have been married and selling her husband's land with him by 1774. Missing 1800-1820 census records for the Barnetts hinder any additional determination at this point. We are assuming there is one wife Mary and she was born about 1758, and probably her birth name was Mary Worley, though this is only based on the name Worley occurring in her children and other descendants for several generations. Since David was clearly born about 1734, he seems to have been an older bachelor until a first marriage which would have occured by 1774. Regardless, David appears to have married late, had children in his 40s and been married to a wife, possibly Mary Worley. This pattern was repeated by his oldest son, Worley, who wasn't married until 1829 at the age 41. On 18 Mar 1774 David and wife Mary divded the 306 acre grant into two equal parcels of land - one half to Barnabas Fare and the other half to brother Richard Linville. David Linville [David Linevell] received a Specie Certificate for contribution to the Revolutionary cause in Sept 1782 for his contribution of supplies furnished to the militia or continental troops as noted in the account books of (Charles) Bruce & (Trangott) Bagge, merchants in the Salem settlement. As a result, descendants are eligible for membership in DAR or SAR. David Linville left a will on 14 February 1787 at Surry County, NC, in which he did not name his wife, though from other sources, we know she was a Mary. The only children named in the will were sons Thomas and Worley and his "other children". David asked Worley to "care for Thomas for life" and states that Worley is not "of age" (i.e. 21). Inventory for the estate, returned by David's brothers Aaron and Richard, indicated that at the time of his death David owned 300 acres in Guilford (later Rockingham) County and 180 in Surry (later Stokes) County with an old mill on it. He died between 14 February 1787 and 10 May 1787 at Surry County, NC. His estate was probated on 10 May 1787 at Surry County, NC. A 1803 deed in Blount County, TN indicates that Richard and Charity Linville asked their "well beloved brother Worley" to stand in their place and sell their share of their father David's land in Belews Creek, Stokes County and Hogan Creek, Rockingham County in NC. See discussion of son Worley Linville for additional details.
