Harmon Linville was also known as Hiram Linville as some family oral history claims. But the only records for this person spell it consistently Harmon. He was born in 1806 at NC. Harmon apparently had a wife before his recorded marriage to Delilah Saylor [Taylor?], because that first wife and at least one male born 1835 - 1840 appear on the 1840 census. Oral history from descendants say he was married to a "Patsy" Ryan, but that woman seems possibly his step-mother, Martha Linville who is in the 1850 census with his father Brace. What happened to Harmon in 1850 is not known, but two of his sons were living with other families in that year. By 1860, the family is together again in Washington County, VA. He apparently married about circa 1831, but whether his wife was Patsy Ryan or she was his step-mother is not clear. He appeared on the census of 1840 at Carter County, TN. He second married Delila Saylor on 25 July 1844 at Carter County, TN. Harmon Linville apparenlty married Mary (?) because a woman named Mary is listed with him in the 1860 census. Harmon Linville appeared on the census of 25 July 1860 at Laurel, Washington County, VA. He died after 25 July 1860.

Worley Linville

M, b. 9 April 1834, d. 28 January 1918
FatherBrace Linville b. 1776
MotherMarjorie Gowens
Names and dates of birth for Worley's children (11 of the 12) were provided by Jim Lee, a great grandson of Worley - March 2004. It is Jim's family's archives that suggests Worley was a son of a "Hiram" Linville. But none of the documentation on Worley suggests that at all. And, in any event, it would appear the name would be Harmon, not Hiram, and Harmon was old enough to have been Worley's brother, not father. Worley Linville was miller as listed in the 1880 census. He was born on 9 April 1834 at Grayson County, VA; While a number of different sources suggest other birthdays (census records, death record, etc.), it is Worley's Civil War pension application, written in 1901, that provides the most likely actual date. That is the one referred to here. Worley appears to be the males age 5-10 entered in the Brace Linville household. He was His profession was listed as wheelwright. in 1850 at Washington County, TN. He appeared on the census of 17 August 1850; Brace W[orley] Linville appears in the household of Brace W.W. Linville, age 74, wheelwright. His age reads "12," but it would have been "17." This may be a result of a misreading a "2" and "7" when the handwritten census was copied and sent to Washingtion, DC. He married Margaret Swanger, daughter of Joshua Swanger and Nancy Howard, on 24 January 1857 at Carter County, TN; Worley's first marriage. Worley has not initially identified directly on the 1860 census, although his father, Brace and his wife Martha, are listed twice, in both Johnson and Carter counties on different days a month apart.

A Warly Linville (age 27) has subsequently been found on the 5 Jun 1860 census for Brush Creek, Washington Co, TN. Wife Margeret (age 19), son Samuel J. (age 2) and son John T. (age 9 months) are listed with Warley.) Worley Linville appeared on the census of 5 June 1860 at Brush Creek District, Washington County, TN; Found as Warly Linville
Margaret (wife) age 19
Samuel J, age 2
John Thomas age 9 months. Worley served in the Confederate Army with the Sullivan Co. Tennessee Reserves. He enlisted in Blountville, TN. Description - dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes per the his enlistment. He appeared on the census of 1870 at District 11, Washington County, TN. He appeared on the census of 16 June 1880 at Dist. #11, Washington County, TN; Worley Linville appears in the 1880 census with wife Margaret, and children John T., Mary A., William D., Anna E., Amanda J., Henry W., and James Hughes. He married Matilda Young on 2 May 1889; Worley's second marriage. Worley Linville appeared on the census of 18 June 1900; Worley is living with his sister Jane (Linville) Hughes Hensley and her second husband, Daniel Hensley. This is right before his marriage to Lorena Hensley, who seems likely to be an in-law of Jane's. He married Lorena Hensley on 25 June 1900 at Carter County, TN; Worley's third marriage. Worley Linville applied for a pension on 2 January 1901 at Johnson City, Carter County, TN. State of Tennessee Confederate Pension records convey that Worley Linville was married (present wife age 43) with 12 children (5 boys and 7 girls), ages 16-43, no real estate and a little furniture. He appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at Dist. #5, Carter County, TN; Worley Linville is living with his third wife, "Rena," and his brother-in-law Daniel Hensley and his new wife, Sarah. Jane apparently died about 1902. There are Hughes families living on both sides of him. He died on 28 January 1918 at Johnson City, Carter County, TN, at age 83; There are several potential errors on Worley's death record. The information was submitted by Mrs. Hugh Cox of Johnson City, TN. It isn't clear how she is related. It indicates that Worley was born July 12, 1827 (age 90-11-14), not Apr 9, 1834, as he provided for his own pension application, which is likely more accurate. Both indicate place of birth VA, although, the pension application is more specific. The death record lists "Brace Linville" as his father, born in VA; and "Gilda Glover" as his mother, born in VA. The latter may not be accurate or if it is that means Brace, too was married four times. Worley was married three, possibly four times. The multiple marriages may provide a reason for the discrepancies in the death record information. He was buried on 29 January 1918 at Hughes Cemetery, Carter County, TN; There is no stone visible in the cemetery, as reported by Wanda Manning, June 2004.
