Lost three fingers on his right hand as the result of the accidental discharge of his weapon in Dec 1862 while his unit was encamped near Nashville, TN. Linville died on 31 January 1863 at Ashley, Washington County, IL; Died aboard Ohio & Missisiisppi railroad car while returning home after being wounded in the Civil War. His brother, James, was with him. His father, John, buried him at home. He was buried at Salem Cemetery, Wayne County, IL.

Linville married Agusta T. Blake, daughter of (?) Blake, in 1860 at IL; John's first marriage. Enlisted D Co., 5th Cavalry Regiment of Illinois, Union Army. Discharged from the service on account of surgeons certificate of disability. John was left in Helena, AR post office when his regiment went to Vicksburg with Gen. Grant. John A. Linville moved at KS in 1870 Moved west to KS and later moved on to CO. He and Agusta T. Blake appeared on the census of 1875 at Mitchell County, KS; Kansas census. John A. Linville married Mary E. Jackson on 31 May 1882 at Ligonier County, IN. John A. Linville moved at Evansville, IN, in December 1890 Returned to southern IL where he learned that his mother and sister were living in Evansville, IN. Returned to Evansville to help support his family. Shortly after starting a job at a local lumber company, John severly injured his foot in a fall from which he never completely recovered. He married Mary Jane Palmer on 29 July 1891 at Evansville, IN. John A. Linville moved at New Orleans, LA, in February 1892 After marrying Mary Jane, who was a corset agent for the St. Louis Corset Company, they worked their way thru Henderson, KY, Bowling Green, KY, Nashville, TN and Birmingham, AL before reaching New Orleans, LA. Mary had two sisters in New Orleans. They handled half of LA as their territory for the corset company as a way of making a living. He and Mary Jane Palmer appeared on the census of 1910 at Washington Parish, LA. John A. Linville lived in March 1911 at Waco, McLennan County, TX. He died on 3 November 1914 at Franklinton, LA, at age 73. He was buried at Ellis Cemetery, Washington Parish, LA.
