William Linville Sr.

M, b. before 1755, d. after 1811
Father-CanWilliam Linvill b. c 1738, d. bt 1754 - 1759
Mother(?) Unknown
There is growing evidence that this William Linville who owned land in the late 1790s in Rowan County NC, and whose descendants moved to Rockcastle Co KY, is the son William (bc 1735), the second son of Thomas (bc. 1703). Thomas's second son, William, was old enough (at least 16) to be taxed in 1751 with his father and older brother Thomas. But then disappears from the records -- including the 1759 Tax record for the area of Rowan County NC, which is the next extant record after 1751. This William (bc 1755) cannot be the same person as William (also bc 1755) the son of Thomas's brother William (bc 1708 and was killed at the Falls in 1766- married to Ellender Bryan) because that William is more easily documented with the land transfer following the death of Wm Sr. in 1766 at the falls, a 1784 Rowan County land record, and a 1799 probate for William’s (bc 1708) son William in Clark Co KY who died clearly not married and with no offspring. That William's grandmother Eleanor (Bryan) Linville moved with her two sons, Morgan and William to Kentucky by 1790.

Eliminating this William (bc 1755; d after 1811) as the son of William (bc 1708) and Ellender Bryan, there needs to be another option for how this William (bc 1755 and the father of several children) fits into the Linville genealogy. We know for sure, from Y-DNA, that his male descendants are definitely Linvilles.

A "working hypothesis" - definitely not certain - is that Thomas Linville’s (bc 1703; dc 1761) sons William (bc 1735) and David Linville (bc 1738) were the "Linville brothers" noted on an historical map of what is now Franklin County, VA and that William (bc 1755; d after 1811) was the son of that William (bc 1735 and grandson of Thomas) - possibly born in VA. There are two geographic features that would at least suggest that at least some Linvilles were in the present area of Franklin Co VA before 1760 who were called the Linville brothers as indicated on the map.

Original records are extremely sparse to support this hypothesis. The geographic features in 2023 are spelled Lynville Mountain and Lynville Creek (and Little Lynville Creek). But previously - at least in the 18th century, the spelling was "Linville," giving rise to the speculation that some males in the family had something to do with the area before 1760.

ONE possibility is that William (bc 1735) and brother David (bc 1738) had established a waystation along the Stanton (now Roanoke) River some distance from the Great Wagon Road for a short period of time - long enough for William to marry (possibly a woman with maiden name Worley) and have at least one, possibly two sons, and then died before their father, Thomas (bc 1703; dc. 1761) died. Then, the brother David returned to the father Thomas's land in Belews Creek NC and took over their father's land grant. Their older brother Thomas already had a land grant at Belews Creek during the 1750s. David recorded his land in 1763.

Two additional things are notable to support this hypothesis: 1) both this William and brother David are the only branches of the family who used the name Worley - William's descendants using it extensively. This suggests both had some connection to the Worley family, though it could not have been in NC as there are no recorded Worleys in this area of NC at the time, while there are in VA.

2) There are two records in NC that suggest there were two Williams of the same age - The first is a record of two Williams included in the list of men yet to take the oath in support of the revolution in Rowan Co NC in 1778. But there is an original extant record for the William who was son of William (bc 1708; d 1766) in 1799 Clark Co KY that indicates that one definitely took the oath in support of the Revolution. That leaves one William for whom there is no further record regarding the oath - but clearly of similar age.
The second record is a 1782 tax record for a William Linville with no land but 4 horses and 16 cattle living along Belews Creek near Aaron Linville, likely his uncle. This is the only tax record in Surry or Rowan County tax records that includes this second William.

Since we know nothing about the wives of either William (bc 1735; dc 1759) or his son, William (bc 1755; d after 1811 in Rockcastle County KY), it is possible that one of them was married to a woman whose roots were from the William Linville-Ellender Bryan community around Shallowford of the Yadkin River AND that he had contact with collection of descendants of Thomas (bc 1703; dc 1761) at Belews. Although not listed in the 1790 census by a Linville household, both William and Worley who settled in Rockcastle Co KY have land claims in Rowan Co NC in the late 1790s.

This hypothesis needs to be explored further, even with the limited records for the time and place in that part of Virginia.

Much of the original information for William Linville Sr. (bc 1755) and his descendants was submitted and researched predominately by Lee Anglin and Edna Brock Huff from family records and the Scaffold Cane Cemetery in Rockcastle County, KY.

Additional detail forson William Linville, Jr. and Martha Linville and all of their descendants was provided by Jeff Renner - May 2002.

This is now supplemented by census, land, tax and probate records.
William Linville Sr. was born before 1755 at Rowan County, NC; William is over 45 in the 1800 Rowan County NC census, making the only two possible grandfathers were the brothers Thomas (bc 1702) and William (bc 1708). The third brother, John, was not in NC in the 1750s when William was born and also had a son William born in 1757 - definitely not the same William. He appeared in court A second William "Lynville" appears on the court record of those who either didn't appear of neglected to take the oath or affirmation of allegiance. This William's name is among a group who seem to be the same neighbors to his state grant he obtained after the war (Ellis, Hinkle, some Bryans, Howards). The fact that he appears back in Belews Creek after the war in 1782 before he obtained the grant may be a reflection of relationships with his wife's or mother's family. Research needs to continue. in August 1778 at Capt Cook's District, Rowan County, NC. He appears on the 1782 tax list for Cooks District, Belews Creek, Surry County, NC, The 1782 tax is the first time that William clearly appears as an adult. He is not indicated as a "single man," but he has no land and a three households away from what would be his uncle Aaron Linvill. He acquired William Linville Sr. on on 4 November 1784; He seems likely to be the same William Linville who acquired this state grant in 1784 not far from the family of William and Elender (Bryan) Linville and adjacent to Joseph and Alice (Linville) Bryan. If so, he is the only connecting link between the two brothers who arrived in North Carolina in the fall of 1747. Brothers Thomas (c1703-c1761) and William (c1708-d1766) and there families do not cross over into any other records together. Their settlements were 30 miles from each other, separated by the Moravian Claim. It seems likely the females in the family (perhaps his great aunt Alice(Linville) Bryan? or another female related to Williams mother or his wife provide the understanding for the moves between the Forks in the Yadkin and Belews Creek branches of the family. Others may want to pursue. He asigned a request for 100 acres of land in Rockingham Co., NC to Cornelius Cook on 3 May 1786 using an upside down W for his mark. The William Linville who was witness to Thomas Job's 1786 will has a clearly different signature mark than that of his first cousin once removed William Linville (d 1799), son of William and Ellender (Bryan) Linville. William Linville does not appear as head of household in NC census records though all of the neightbors to his 1786 state grant are clearly present. He appeared on the census of 1800 at Rowan County, NC; William Linvill appears in the same district of Rowan in which the descendants of Thomas Job whose will he witnessed and Isaac and Jacob Smith appear. suggesting that this is the same William who owned land in Rowan County, sold it to Evan Ellis and moved to Rockcastle County, KY by 1810 when he appears there in the census and 1811 tax records with probable sons Worley and William, Jr. He moved at Rockcastle, Pulaski County, KY, circa 1805 Moved to the far eastern part of Pulaski Co. which became Rockcastle in 1810. William Linville of Rowan County, NC sold Evan Ellis of the same place, 105 1/2 acres of land on Linville Creek for 100 pounds. This is the same land that William bought from Henry Hendricks in 1787 and that Eleanor Linville sold Hendricks two years earlier. While this might lead one to believe that William Linville was a descendant of Eleanor's, the details of the lives of her descendants make this highly unlikely. It is more likely that William's ancestry is found in the relationship between the Hendricks and the Linville families in some other way. He appeared on the census of 1810 at Rockcastle County, KY. He died after 1811 at Rockcastle County, KY; Probable location of death.
